My name is Cathy Himlin and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with a background in counseling and social work. I am a graduate of the University of Southern California with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master’s degree in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling. I am a member of California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
I have over 25 years combined experience as a therapist and a social worker in the field of child protection, working with children of all ages, couples and their families. As a social worker I was required to assess, monitor and facilitate appropriate parenting styles for birth and foster parents, including work in all levels of the Dependency Court system. My experience and training as a therapist and social worker include: family therapy; child behavioral issues; parenting education, support, and attachment; reunification therapy and court related issues; adolescent issues; cognitive behavioral interventions; foster care and adoption support; women’s issues; Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT); and grief and loss.
I work with children and families who are going through divorce to help you and your child adjust to the new living situations and emotional stress you experience in this process. I assist families when there is child alienation with a parent or grandparent as well. I am also available to write treatment summaries and court reports as needed, or to appear in Family Law or Dependency Court to testify regarding conjoint therapy sessions.
Parents sometimes come in feeling powerless and exhausted with their children. I can help you find solutions that decrease family stress and create a more positive bond with your child or teenager. I teach a variety of coping skills to help achieve these goals and to bring about positive change in your family system.
I use Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) to help couples who are in distress and are stuck. My goal is to help you recognize and express your need to feel close, secure, and responded to.
In individual therapy, I help clients suffering from many anxiety and depression symptoms to feel better. We explore various ways to manage stress and to bring a healthier balance back to your life.
